Child tax credit

Generally, to qualify for the child tax credit, your dependent must:
  • Be under age 17, and a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien
  • Be your son, daughter, stepson, stepdaughter, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, or a descendent of such individual. Adopted children and foster children may qualify
  • Have the same home as you for more than half the year (temporary absences due to special circumstances may not count as absences)
Enter the number of dependents that meet these requirements. Your ability to claim the credit depends on your income level, but you do not need to consider this factor--we will estimate the amount of the credit you are entitled to, if any, based on your income.
